EU-China Workshop on Customs Modernization and Trade Facilitation, 10-11 November 2008
On 10-11 November
2008, the EU-China Trade Project organised a two-day EU-China Workshop on Customs
Modernization and Trade Facilitation - Introduction to the EU Customs
Blueprints. The workshop was hosted by the General Administration of Customs of
the People’s Republic of China and the Directorate-General for Taxation and
Customs Union of the European Commission. More than 50 representatives of the General
Administration of Customs as well as Chinese and European business
representatives participated in the workshop.
Feasibility Study: Post-manufacturing Traceability System between the PRC and the EU, November 2008
This study, carried out during 2008, focuses on the
commercial, technical, legal and political feasibility of a post-manufacturing
traceability system along the supply chain between the People’s Republic of
China and the European Union. The
traceability system would cover product quality, safety, authenticity,
compliance as well as the manufacturing process, environmental impact and CSR-related
issues. The study highlights the fundamentals needed for such a system to be
launched, operated and sustained over the mid- to long-term.
EU-China Workshop on Wealth Management, 15-17 October 2008
The EU-China Trade Project organized a three-day workshop on Wealth
Management in Dalian, Liaoning Province, from 15 -17 October 2008 to support
the modernisation of the Chinese financial sector. About 90 China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC)
officials representing central and all provincial offices as well as another 40
senior management staff from trust companies attended the workshop. Mr. Cai
E’sheng, Vice Chairman of the CBRC, gave the keynote speech at the workshop.

The
EU-China Workshop on Integrated Financial Services on 26 September 2008 concluded the EUCTP’s Financial Services
Training series. The EU-China
Workshop on Integrated Financial Services addressed issues relating to the
regulation and supervision of integrated operations in the financial services
sector, financial conglomerates and financial holding companies.
EU-China Workshop on Financial Innovation, 25 September 2008
Following two
previous financial services training sessions held in December 2007 and March
2008, the EU-China Trade Project organized the EU-China Workshop on Financial Innovation on 25 September 2008. The
EU-China Workshop on Financial
Innovation was designed to address concerns of Chinese regulatory
authorities in regards to Financial
Innovation and analysed EU and US best practice and setbacks in this
area.
Joint China-U.S.-EU Initiative on Consumer Product Safety Compliance, 19-24 September 2008
Ensuring a high level of product safety is a matter of shared concern
for producers, and for authorities, in China, the European Union and the United
States. To stress the importance of product safety the
European Union’s Directorates-General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO) and Enterprise and
Industry (DG ENTR) and the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) launched a
product safety initiative together with the Chinese authorities. The EU-China
Trade Project supported the organization and logistics of this joint product
safety initiative.
EU-China Roundtable & Conference on Consultation and Better Regulation, 22-23 September 2008
On
22-23 September 2008, the EU-China Trade Project organised a roundtable and a
conference on Consultation and Better Regulation in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.
The Roundtable meeting on the 22nd brought together scholars, officials,
business and other stakeholders and addressed the concept of Better Regulation,
the European experience and its relevance to China, and how to consult
stakeholders efficiently and effectively. The Conference on the following day
aimed at explaining the concept of Better Regulation and eliciting reaction and
support from a broad-based local audience.
EU-China Workshop on Anti-Price Monopoly in China, 22 September 2008
The EU-China Trade Project, together with the China Price Association,
organized the EU-China Workshop on Anti-Price Monopoly in China, held in
Beijing on 22 September 2008. The workshop was intended to support the
Department of Pricing of the National Development and Reform Commission of the
People’s Republic of China (NDRC) in its efforts to draft and enforce price
monopoly related regulations.
EU-China Comparative Study on Insurance Services: Market Openness, July 2008
The
EU-China Trade Project initiated the EU-China
Comparative Study on Market Openness of Insurance Services is to analyze
the relative openness of insurance markets in China and selected EU countries. The
European Union and China can both benefit from better mutual understanding and
closer cooperation in the insurance sector. The European experience with
insurance sector reform and development can also serve as a useful model for
China in its reform efforts.
Second EU-China Roundtable on Product Safety and Consumer Protection, 10 June 2008
During the China visit of EU
Consumer Commissioner Mrs. Meglena Kuneva, the EU-China Trade Project (EUCTP)
organized the Second EU-China Roundtable on Product Safety and Consumer
Protection on 10 June 2008. The roundtable focused on children’s safety and toy
safety. It provided an update and overview of the current toy safety
developments in China and evaluated responses to China’s new product safety
regulations and enhanced surveillance and enforcement in the toy industry.
Report: Organic Agriculture in China - Current Situation and Challenges, May 2008
The EU-China Trade Project has produced a report on organic
agriculture in China in cooperation with the China Organic Food Certification
Centre (COFCC). The report on Organic
Agriculture in China – Current Situation and Challengespresents an
overview of organic agriculture in China with a focus on three key areas: accreditation of organic certification bodies,
certification of organic products and management of organic production. It also
includes an analysis of the main challenges facing China’s organic agriculture.
